Although probably not nearly as helpful as Mikes tips, I will impart some of the wisdom that helps me with my photography.

Mike asked recently (the email came through about 20 seconds ago) how I organise my photos seeing as I have over 10,000 of them within Lightroom. He also asked about backing up.

As he suggested, I use folders. My photos are all stored on the F: drive of my computer (F of course being the first letter of Fotos) and are contained within the Originals folder. This is automatically done on import as well as the file being renamed to RXA_YYYYMMDD_HHMMSS(-sequence within that second if more than one is taken).CR2

Within this folder is a hierarchicaldate structure. So a photo taken last night at 5.35pm would be stored like such:

F:\Original\2007\11\07\RXA_20071107_173523.CR2

I use Lightroom collections to separate my shoots into um … shoots as can be seen in the picture below. This allows me to scroll through the library to find the image I want quickly.

As for backing up … a crap load of DVD’s my friend.

Hope this tip was a good start and I can impart more later.

A big thank you goes to the houses on the following streets for their unsecured wireless access points that I hopped on board at some point today.

Maidstone Street, Ringwood East and Ringwood-Warrandyte Road, Warrandyte South.

As I type this I am on the side of the road, killing time online thanks to the above mentioned second unsecured wireless access point. I just looked up into the eyes of a cow. Yes a real cow.

My drums are all set up at tonights location (and the band isn’t even supposed to arrive for an hour) so I thought I’d touch base with you guys.

My tomorrow just got a little worse. As well as playing two separate concerts in three different uniforms, any downtime I had during the day is now being taken up with photography duties for the regiment.

As those who follow my Flickr feed (especially my 365days project) will know I have recently begun seeing someone.

Whilst you will get very little of out me about this person on this blog (to protect the innocent) there is one aspect I find especially fascinating for the effect it has had on me. Her house has no broadband.

Whilst normally the thought of this would cause me to go into anaphylactic shock, it has been quite an interesting sensation to spend time away from the tubes. I do spend a lot of time online, what with Flickr, Facebook, my various websites and email, so to spend seven or eight hours awake and not online is quite a new experience.

Of course it goes without saying that there is a dial-up connection for the mandatory uploading of self portraits and even when I suggested that I upload a recent shot the following day I was told quite emphatically that it was important to keep going as I was. So the photo in question was uploaded the same day as it was shot, like the 52 others before it.

Signing off now as I really should think about going to bed as it is midnight and I have a very busy weekend planned including a gig, dinner with friends of L and a trip to Melbourne with other friends.

Someone else has posted the question that I blogged about on a previous site (about three years ago).

“Look, I know it’s Friday you’re just looking for some fun stuff to end the work week with, but we’ve got a pressing matter to discuss. Let’s say you’re a new father and a movie fan. When your child is of an appropriate age to start watching movies, in which order will you show him/her the six Star Wars movies? By original release date (Star Wars, Empire, Jedi, Phantom Menace, Clones, Sith) or according to the intra-movie chronology (Phantom Menace, Clones, Sith, Star Wars, Empire, Jedi)?”

It appears that the consensus from the masses (and most of the people I have raised this with) agree with what I think will be my final decision … Matthew will need to see the films in release date order.

That’s a load off my mind.

I spent three hours today hand coding a page which no one besides me will probably ever see. It a page for my upcoming portfolio website that allows me to enter in the data easily for each photo I display.

I suppose in the long run it will make the data entry faster but my Lord, it was a slog.

I’m switching off soon to watch a series of Red Dwarf. I watched series three last night and Series two is a calling tonight. I need to go back to my actual home and grab the rest.

May not get to an entry tomorrow as my Mum is flying off to Europe for four weeks and I am saying goodbye at the airport. May not get the chance to catch up with you until Friday.
